There are ways to mitigate alcohol's effect on health, one of which is using curcumin.
Alcohol's detrimental effect on health and longevity is thoroughly documented. One of its impacts is influence on DNA methylation (methyl group addition to DNA affecting the gene expression), which is one of the hallmarks of cancer.
A recent study on honey bees brings bad news and good news. The bad news is that low doses of ethanol shorten lifespan. And the good news is that there are ways to mitigate alcohol's effect on health, one of which is using curcumin.
Curcumin is the active compound of the turmeric spice, giving it a yellow color and distinctive flavor. This spice and derived curcumin is widely used in Asian medical systems, such as Ayurveda or traditional Chinese medicine.
The study concludes that ethanol and curcumin administered together, reversed alcohol-induced DNA methylation and lifespan shortening. Curcumin blocked methylation of genes involved in fertility, temperature regulation, and tubulin transport. Study also evaluated other compounds that have a positive effect on the longevity of the bees, such as valproic acid, isovaleric acid, and cyanocobalamin. This finding adds another piece of mosaic since the protective effect of curcumin is already documented on the liver in mice and alcohol-induced liver damage in rats.
