Neuromodulation therapy enhances or suppresses specific neural circuits in the brain for the treatment of disease.
Our brains are involved in regulating all of our various conscious and non-conscious decisions from memory, movement and coordination, hunger, sleep to survival. However, as we age, our brains age too – the stresses of daily life, lack of sleep, the accumulation of misfolded proteins can contribute – and these have been associated with common symptoms of aging such as the loss of focus, information processing and memory and also with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease. Neuromodulation therapy involves enhancing or suppressing specific neural circuits in the brain for the treatment of disease. In this video we’ll begin with some background to the concept of neuromodulation before discussing some of the different approaches that have therapeutic potential such as electrical stimulation, the use of light and the use of drugs. Will then discuss whether this has potential for healthy aging.
