Sirtuins – the longevity proteins (VIDEO)
The sirtuins are involved in various cellular processes from regulating metabolism to DNA repair.
Proteins are found in every cell of our bodies. There are thousands of different types of proteins and they all have various functions within our bodies. Familiar proteins are collagen which is a structural protein and the most abundant protein in our bodies, or haemoglobin which carries oxygen to our different organs. The proteins we will talk about in this video are the sirtuins – the sirtuins are a family of proteins and are involved in various cellular processes from regulating metabolism to DNA repair. Importantly, the activity of sirtuins have been associated with longevity and so once we know what sirtuins are, we will take a look at this connection and therapeutic strategies in development to activate the sirtuins.
